Google celebrates Vietnam National Day

Today’s ‘Google Doodle’ celebrates Vietnam’s 75th Independence day (Sept. 2, 2020) with an image that evokes traditional Vietnam: a couple boating in the middle of a lotus pond, according to Lao Dong.

The artwork features a woman wearing the Vietnamese Ao Dai, a national garment that holds much historical and cultural significance, and a man wearing a Non La – a palm-leaf conical hat and symbol of the hardworking people.

The Doodle is available to all Google users in Vietnam. This is not the first time Google has featured a doodle in celebration of the national day. The years 2018 and 2016 also saw stunning depictions of the Southeast Asian country.

The special date goes back to 1945, where revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh (known to the people simply as Uncle Ho) gave a speech in front of the citizens at Ba Dinh Square in declaration of Vietnam’s independence, now under the name the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The patriotic occasion sees people display the flag of Vietnam on streets and outside their homes. It is a public holiday, with all schools and most workplaces closed.
