Hanoi to pilot air quality monitoring system

Hanoi has begun testing a new air-quality forecasting and early warning system aimed at giving residents advance notice of pollution spikes, the Hanoi Times reports. The pilot program uses real-time monitoring data and forecasting models to predict when air quality is likely to deteriorate, allowing authorities to issue alerts and consider short-term response measures.

Officials say the system could help people make informed decisions about outdoor activities, particularly during peak pollution periods in winter and early spring, when smog levels in the capital tend to rise sharply. The trial phase will also be used to fine-tune data accuracy and assess how forecasts can be integrated into public health advisories and city management tools.

If successful, the program could form part of a broader push to improve transparency around air pollution and support longer-term efforts to reduce emissions in the capital.

As of 9 a.m. today, PM2.5 levels in Hanoi stood at 223, a “very unhealthy” reading, according to the United Nations International School monitoring station in Ciputra.
