Authorities in Hanoi have stepped up food safety and hygiene inspections ahead of the 2026 Tet holiday, as demand for meat, alcohol and festive foods rises sharply across the capital, Hanoi Times reports.

The Hanoi Market Surveillance Department has deployed multiple inspection teams to check production, processing and trading facilities linked to high-demand Tet goods, including meat and meat products, beverages, alcoholic drinks and confectionery. Inspections are focusing on wholesale markets, supermarkets, shopping centres and street vendors.

Officials say the goal is to prevent food poisoning and detect violations related to unsafe storage and transport, smuggled or counterfeit goods, and products of unknown origin. Several cases involving large quantities of unsafe food have already been uncovered in early January.

The municipal Department of Health has also launched mobile food safety teams to strengthen on-site supervision and respond quickly to any incidents.

Authorities said inspection campaigns will continue before, during and after Tet, with particular attention paid to alcohol products, which have been linked to food safety incidents during past holiday periods.
