Hundreds of Grab motorbike drivers turned off the GrabBike app from morning to afternoon on Dec. 7 to protest Grab increasing the percentage of earnings they take from their drivers, an increase from 20% to more than 27.2%, VN Express has reported.
Drivers believe that the percentage is too high, and will result in a sharp decrease in their incomes, making their lives harder, especially through the pandemic.
By early afternoon, an ever increasing number of drivers gathered at Duy Tan Street, Cau Giay District, where Grab’s office is located. They honked their horns and stretched banners to protest and livestreamed the event.
Together, they spread to many other streets such as Lang, Kim Ma, and Nguyen Chi Thanh, before driving to Hoan Kiem Lake and eventually being disbanded by the police. Many drivers still remain on strike, with many groups of the unhappy workers remaining in front of the Grab office waiting.
Grab, a Singaporean rie-hailing comany, has yet to make a public comment on the strike.
