The Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility (COVAX) will distribute Covid-19 vaccines to nations with low income from late January 2021, according to VN Express.
COVAX is co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the WHO. Its aim is to accelerate the development and manufacture of Covid-19 vaccines, and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world.
“COVAX has approached more than 2 billion Covid-19 vaccine injection doses,” Kate O’Brien, the Director of the World Health Organization’s Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals said. “We may start delivering the doses in late January, or else in the first half of February for sure.”
The facility has successfully called for a 6 billion U.S. dollars in sponsorship to distribute vaccines to 92 developing nations which cannot afford Covid-19 vaccines on their own, O’Brien said.
According to the WHO overview analysis, the world currently has 63 vaccines that have been tested in humans, of which 21 types are at the final stage. Another 172 candidates are under development in the laboratory.
At present, developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom or Europe have begun vaccination programs for their residents.
COVAX aims to distribute at least 2 billion doses by the end of 2021 and give access to injection to 20% of the vulnerable population in 92 African, Asian and Latin American countries.
