Vietnam launches tree-planting campaigns for New Year

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended at an event to launching a tree-planting campaign in Yen Bai Province on Thursday, according to Vietnam News.

This year Yen Bai Province plans to plant at least 520 hectares of trees. The PM said he hoped that nationwide, with the help of governments and localities, they would reach 42% forest coverage. This would earn the country 12 billion U.S.dollars from wood and wood furniture exports in 2020. By 2025, he said this would like to see this increase to 20 billion U.S. dollars and make Vietnam a wood production and export leader during the next decade.

The PM asked departments, agencies, organizations and people to help in the protection and development of forests.

Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh also attended the launch of a tree-planting campaigns, at a national relic site in Pho Tho Province on Thursday. The province plans to plant more than 10,000 hectares of concentrated forest in 2020 and increase the protection of forests. They will also use technology to improve the productivity and quality of the forests and support sustainability.

Sixty years ago, President Ho Chi Minh started the tree-planting campaigns to help with environmental protection, socioeconomic development and national defense and security. In 1959, Ho Chi Minh wrote about the importance of tree planting for each person, family and the country. Since that year, tree planting has been a big part of the Tet ( Lunar New Year) tradition.
